Dr Priya Ambaram

Dr Priya Ambaram graduated with her MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2005. With a long-standing passion for paediatrics, her journey in the field began during her Community Service at Stanger Hospital in KwaZulu Natal.

After completing her community service, Dr Ambaram worked at RK Khan Hospital in KZN as a Senior Medical Officer in the Department of Paediatrics. In 2009, she returned to Gauteng and specialised as a Paediatrician in the Wits Circuit. Following this, Dr Ambaram worked at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital as a Specialist Paediatrician until October 2016. While she was working at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, she completed her training in Paediatric Rheumatology.

Dr Ambaram ventured into private practice in 2018 and is a sessional paediatrician at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where she is involved in the running of the Paediatric Rheumatology Service. She is also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she is involved in teaching medical students and the registrars who are training to become Paediatricians.

Additionally, Dr Ambaram is a Paediatric Rheumatology Subcommittee Representative at the South African Rheumatism Arthritis Association (SARAA) and an Executive Board Member of Arthritis Kids South Africa (AKSA). AKSA’s primary objective is to create awareness of arthritis in children and offer support to their patients and families. Dr Ambaram is also a member of the Paediatric Society of the African League Against Rheumatism (PAFLAR) and the Paediatric Rheumatology European Association (PReS).

At present, there are only three certified Paediatric Rheumatology subspecialists in Gauteng, and Dr Ambaram is one of them. Outside of the workspace, Dr Ambaram is kept busy by her two little boys. She enjoys reading and running in her free time.

What is a paediatric rheumatologist?


A paediatric rheumatologist is a doctor that cares for children and adolescents with medical conditions such as inflammatory and non-inflammatory musculoskeletal disease and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune inflammatory diseases include juvenile dermatomyositis, juvenile Idiopathic arthritis, vasculitis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematous and periodic fever syndromes. Non-inflammatory diseases include chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes, juvenile hypermobility and growing pains.
